Background:
Chile is located on the western coast of South America, stretching
over 4000 kilometres long but only 161 kilometres wide. Over
15 million people live in Chile, with more than 80 percent
in urban areas. Severe drought has made it extremely difficult
for rural communities to consistently produce enough food
and many of the children’s nutritional requirements
are not met. Natural disasters and the current Argentine financial
crisis have placed pressure on the economy. Economic instability
has led to electricity rationing, hydroelectric shortfalls
and inadequate infrastructure in many parts of the country.
Many children living in rural areas do not have access to
education or adequate health care services.
World Vision Australia is working with communities
in Chile. Below is an example of a funded project:
Area Development Programs (ADPs)
Area Development Programs in Chile focus on restoring community
infrastructure, economic and leadership development, youth
education, micro- enterprise, health care and sustainability.
World Vision is working with local partner organisations to
implement ongoing projects. These projects are transforming
the lives of more than 3000 children and their communities,
by helping them to break the poverty cycle and create a sustainable
environment.
