Background

Situated in Southern Africa, Mozambique is a nation struggling to emerge from years of civil conflict, and as a result, is one of the world’s poorest nations. The majority of the 19 million people living in Mozambique live on less than US$2 a day. Families struggle with the most basic needs including access to clean water, sanitation facilities and essential nutritional requirements. More than half the population are under-nourished and HIV/AIDS continues to spread at an alarming rate: 80,000 children are infected with the disease. The education system struggles to provide enough schools, essential equipment and qualified teachers, leaving many children uneducated. Levels of illiteracy are high among adults, with less than half able to read and write.

World Vision Australia is working with communities in Mozambique. Below are examples of funded projects:

Area Development Programs (ADPs)

Area Development Programs provide clean water and adequate sanitation facilities, access to health care and education and training in modern agricultural techniques. The projects help communities build the knowledge, develop skills, and gather the resources they require to live their lives without the need for outside help in the future.

Water and Sanitation

Water and Sanitation Projects provide communities with access to safe drinking water. This project involves building toilets and sanitation facilities and drilling boreholes.

Food Security

Programs include: improving grain storage in granaries; introducing new crops such as sweet potato and cassava; supplying drought resistant crops; and providing disease vaccinations for chickens. These Programs provide long-term food security for families and give hope for a more sustainable future.
