Background

Papua New Guinea is made up of over 600 islands in the Pacific. Home to over 5 million people, the majority of the population rely on agriculture as their means of income and survival. Despite being rich in natural resources, Papua New Guinea struggles to provide basic health care, sanitation and education for its entire people. The civil war in Bougainville caused the economy to suffer and disharmony within communities.

World Vision Australia is working with communities in Papua New Guinea. Below are examples of funded projects:

Primary Health Care

This project focuses on improving water quality and quantity, providing sanitation facilities and increasing accessibility to health care services.

Income generation

Based in Bougainville, this project assists fractured communities to reintegrate. This project has contributed to the disarmament of the region and supports locals to improve their skills and increase their income.

Capacity Building

Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu are all beneficiaries of this project, which provides local staff and communities with management and leadership skills, enabling them to make leadership decisions for their own regions without the reliance on the international community for assistance.
