Background
Romania is one of Europe’s most beautiful countries but is also one of the poorest. Home to over 22 million people, Romanians are attempting to rebuild after years of political turmoil. Basic infrastructure, health and education systems are inadequate, and many families are fractured as a result of decades of unrest. The institutionalisation of children was one of the devastating practices of the old regime and many children still live in orphanages. Because of the breakdown of the family structure, parents often feel unable to provide for their children.
World Vision Australia is working with the communities in Romania. Below is an example of a funded project:
Children of Romania
This project aims to reunite children with their natural families or when that is not possible, provide children with a loving home, rather than a childhood in an institution. From the orphanages the children are first moved into emergency care and then into longer term foster care where they and their families are provided with counselling, day care and preschool education. The project also aims to work with families to prevent child abandonment, institutionalisation, and child abuse.
