Background

Uganda is a landlocked country located in east central Africa. Uganda has a tumultuous past with conflict and political instability marring its development. Most of Uganda's 23 million people are farmers. Many struggle to survive, particularly in the north where they have been fighting a civil war for 15 years. Uganda has a high foreign debt , which diminishes the amount available for health and education. As a result, health facilities are stretched to the limit and illiteracy rates are high. Less than 10 percent of girls and 15 percent of boys enrol in high school.

World Vision Australia is working with the communities in Uganda. Below are examples of funded projects:

Area Development Programs (ADPs)

A large majority of World Vision’s work in Uganda is through child sponsorship. Communities are supported to provide essentials such as health care, safe water, sanitation facilities and education. HIV/AIDS education is a priority.

Food Security

World Vision works with communities to strengthen their capacity to feed themselves. New agricultural techniques and crop varieties were introduced to increase food production. Training was also provided in the care and maintenance of livestock. Communities with high incidences of HIV/AIDS were the main beneficiaries.

HIV/AIDS

World Vision has assisted in decreasing rates of new HIV infections in Ugandan communities. Projects that focus on behavioural change through education have proved successful. World Vision is also supporting communities to care for people living with HIV/AIDS, as well as AIDS orphans.
