Background
Haiti was the world's first black-led republic and the first
Caribbean state to achieve independence. Decades of environmental
degradation, dictatorship and instability have left it one
of the poorest countries in the Americas. The wealthiest 1
percent of Haitians control almost half of the national revenue,
while the majority of the population cannot afford their basic
needs. Haiti is densely populated, with 8.6 million people
in an area less than half the size of Tasmania.
World Vision Australia is working with the communities in Haiti. Below is an example of a funded project:
Environment Project
Grassroots community organisations are trained in sustainable
agriculture techniques so that they can increase their income
and improve their families' diets.
