Background
Located on the Pacific coast of South America, Peru’s landscape is varied and spectacular. Peru has a strong Inca and pre-Inca heritage and is home to the ancient Incan capital of Cuzco and the lost city of Machu Picchu. Most of Peru’s 27 million people live in urban areas and along the coast, with fewer people living in the rugged mountains and dense jungle. Endemic corruption and the marked inequality between the country's rich and poor have hindered development. One-quarter of Peruvian children are chronically malnourished.
World Vision Australia is working with the communities in Peru. Below are examples of funded projects:
Area Development Programs (ADPs)
Urban Area Development Program
The community is supported to provide health care, education, access to clean water and sanitation. Vocational training to improve the livelihood of community members is a major focus of the project. Activities such as mothers' clubs and youth clubs foster community spirit and build closer relations between people throughout the district.
Rural Area Development Program
Low income, poor market infrastructures and lack of basic services are a challenge to the people in this region. The community is being supported through the provision of agricultural products and by training of community members in health, education and community management.
