Houn finds safe haven in Phnom Penh

Running from an abusive childhood in her village, Houn finds herself all alone in the city.

Running from an abusive childhood in her village, Houn finds herself all alone in the city.

Houn was born in rural Cambodia. Her father died of malaria before she was born. When she was only four, her mother died of a chronic illness. She was sent to live with her grandmother, but her life only got worse. Not only was she forced to work in the rice fields, she was also physically abused.

Houn was treated terribly for seven years until, out of sheer desperation, she ran away. She hitched a ride in a truck to the capital Phnom Penh. To survive on her own, Houn scavenged for recyclable rubbish to sell and slept on the street. Houn also suffered constant harassment by street gangs until she was rescued by a World Vision outreach team.

Since then, Houn's life and hope have been restored. She stays at the World Vision Bamboo Shoots Children's Centre, receiving shelter, food and healthcare. Houn is attending school and learning how to read and write.
