About Armadale
In 2003, World Vision was invited to begin working with the Perth Noongar Regional Council and other local Indigenous groups to address the challenges faced by urban Indigenous youth.
The Armadale Youth Program aims to support Aboriginal leaders in developing sustainable solutions that enable their young people to reach their full potential. Its objectives include:
- Deepening young Indigenous people's appreciation of and pride in their own Noongar culture; strengthening their sense of identity and heritage and building personal and social resilience, and
- Assisting Indigenous youth to enter the workforce through appropriate vocational training.
Location
In December 2004, the Western Australian Government granted the Armadale Youth Program the use of a 2.7 hectare property. This will become the base for some of the program's activities.
Governance
The program is run by the Armadale Noongar Corporation (ANC), a newly created community organisation that represents a range of local Indigenous groups.
World Vision's role is to provide assistance and expertise to the ANC as it grows and develops as a sustainable and well-governed Indigenous-directed organisation.
