Thanks to World Vision supporters, similar projects have already brought real and lasting change to the lives of children in many communities.

mid-1980s today

Together with the community of Antsokia Valley, World Vision transformed the site of Ethiopia’s worst famine into a fertile, drought-proof oasis.

One of the most remarkable successes comes from Antsokia Valley in Ethiopia.

Many Australians can still remember the TV images of widespread famine in Ethiopia in the mid-1980s, brought on by severe drought. Back then, thousands of people died of starvation in Antsokia Valley.

Today, after 20 million trees have been planted, the valley is green, with its own unique oasis microclimate able to withstand surrounding drought.

Families thrive by farming in a sustainable way and children are growing up healthy. There’s often even a surplus of crops to export in the dry months.
