Topic: Global Warming Refugees Posted: 29 March 2010 at 8:57am |
Hey Stirrers!
Wow, it's been such a long time since I have posted something on the Blender! So firstly, a BIG HI! to all the new stirrers out there!
Now, the other day at Uni, my lecturer mentioned something about Global Warming Refugees, whereby people are becoming refugees because climate change is having an effect on their villages (flooding, high tides, etc...)
Like any global issue, I think that it is important to educate people on the effects that global warming is having on the world (especially the world's poorest of countries.) However, this is becoming very hard, because a) many people do not believe that global warming is an issue and b) a lot of people are paying less attention to the problem because it is becoming a topic that is discussed quite often and hence, people are bored with it.
SO, my question is, how do we get people more interested in learning global warming and contributing towards ensuring that the effects of global warming are kept as minimal as possible? Also, maybe we could think about how we can help people who have already become victims and are now known as Global Warming Refugees.
Looking forward to hearing what you have to say!!
Happy Stirring!

Wonderful question, and if I wasn't just logging off to go to a lecture I'd put more time into my response. I look forward to mulling this over and getting in a response when I get home tonight!

I don't know, to me it seems like because all statistics quoted are what is going to happen in twenty years, or in fifty years, people treat it like it's not happening now. If everyone realised that people today are being affected by Global Warming, I think it'd make a difference.
I'd like to see a statistic of how many Global Warming refugees there are or how many people are affected by rising sea levels, I think it'd be a good one to quote when speaking about the issue.

Well I can certainly say that I believe it's true and it's an issue. Many people don't think that far...

mmm...global warming is a tricky one. I think there is so much hype and "political hijacking" of the issue. And people also forget that there are natural weather cycles. After all, we have only been recording the weather for the past one hundred years or so.
That being said, I am not denying it's a problem. But I think we need to come up with PRACTICAL solutions- not money making schemes like carbon trading.
Sustainable farming methods, smart water use is what needs to be taught.
Did you know that farmers in Australia still use channel and flood irigation, even though 90 PERCENT!!!!! of the water evaporates!!!
Take Ansokia Valley in ethiopia for example. After the '84 famine, WV came in and helped the village. When the famine of '02 came, they were totally self-supported and even SELLING food to other villages. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCP6H5Z8s8w

Ryan, I didn't realise it was that many! :(
Littlej, I didn't realise at all. I think alot of Western Farmers perhaps think they're the only farmers in the world? I mean, to not understand the workings or consequences of their work, and/or finding options for more sustainable practices. I guess it could be many traditions too; the idea that this was how it was done back in the pioneering days and why should we change, even though now there are better ways of seeing the consequences of these actions and therefore more need to make a change for a better and even a just future.

I think this is quite a similar problem to that we are talking about in the Haiti thread...
We celebrate when an issue of global urgency is 'mainstreamed' - for example, cadburys going F.T means that everyday people are seeing that label on their food... but it doesn't necessarily mean they know or care about it at all.
And when an issue becomes SO mainstream, like global warming or extreme poverty that people get bored of it, they switch off. Can we win? Is there a 'happy medium' somewhere?

I have personal experiences with the channel issue; a whole ton of fruit growing blocks around where I live use open channels and many visitors that come from the city and that are outraged by it.
And wow, thanks Ryan for the statistic- will be stored in brain. It's horrifying, isn't it?
