A day to remember: A team photo of the Noongar Circus after performing at the Fremantle Festival.

The Armadale Noongar Circus is part of the joint program initiated by World Vision and the Armadale Noongar Corporation to promote well-being among Indigenous youth. Since our last update in January 2005, the circus has come a long way. Around 90 Indigenous children have had a go at stilt walking, juggling, uni-cycling and acrobatics.

Under the patient guidance of circus 'master' Reg Bolton and visiting trainers, the young people have achieved a level of competence and confidence to take part in public events, such as:

  • The opening of the Government House in Perth
  • Fremantle Festival Parade
  • Perth Christmas Pageant
  • The opening ceremony of Roe Highway
  • Minnawarra Festival

The circus training is a big hit with the children. It provides an exciting after-school activity for them, where they learn interesting skills. The circus is also a strong social tool for youth development. It brings young people a sense of identity, adventure, trust, dream and imagination, and a diligent work ethic, all in the context of fun.

They also get the chance to mix in a large group and learn how to get along and work with one another through performing. Teenagers are also encouraged to participate in decision-making.

But much more than that, the conduct and mode of performance are designed in a way that honours the Noongar culture, both traditional and contemporary.

The youth project has found a new home at a rural property in Bedfordale. Alannah MacTiernan, Planning and Infrastructure Minister and Member for Armadale, handed over a 'peppercorn lease' to the Armadale Noongar Corporation for the 2.7-hectrare property.

Known as the Home for the Heart, the property will be used as a base to nurture the social and cultural development of Indigenous youth of Armadale, helping to address issues of training and employment in the area.

"I welcome the World Vision approach and will give every assistance to provide our Indigenous youth the courage, skills and confidence to take on employment," said Ms. MacTiernan.
